Unlike classical and popular music publishers, who own less than 50% of their copyright in a composition, production music libraries possess each of the copyrights of their songs. Therefore, it can be accredited without the composer’s consent, as is required in licensing music from publishers that were normal. Generation music is a handy solution for media manufacturers–they may be assured they will have the ability to permit any piece of music at the library at a pace that is reasonable, whereas a work could be costly. Likewise licensing a well-known piece of popular music could cost anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending upon the prominence of the performer(s).

Production music libraries offer a range of musical styles and genres, enabling producers and editors to obtain what they want in the library. Music libraries differ in size from a few hundred paths up to thousands. De Wolfe Music in 1927 set up the first production music library with the arrival of sound in movie. The business scored music for use in silent film.

Production music is often utilized in film, tv and television as theme and/or desktop music. Arthur Wood’s « Barwick Green », composed in 1924, nevertheless serves as the subject for long-running BBC Radio soap The Archers.

American TV has also utilized production music, most especially with the themes for Monday Night Football (« Heavy Action » from Johnny Pearson) as well as The People’s Court (« The Big One » from Alan Tew). Other notable examples are the Nickelodeon animated series The Ren and Stimpy Show and SpongeBob SquarePants, which use well-known classical music excerpts and a vast range of pre-1960s manufacturing music cues–such as many pieces recognizable in their use in previous cartoons–that were chosen because of their ironic and funny effect.

Session performers and production music composers typically work anonymously and have rarely become known beyond their circle. In recent years some veteran composer-performers in this field like Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron and Keith Mansfield have achieved attention and fame as a consequence of a new interest in manufacturing music of the 1960s and 1970s, especially the ‘beat’ and electronica cues listed for KPM along with other labels, that have been widely sampled by DJs and record producers. In recent years some of these musicians have contributed performances of the compositions that were classic under the category name KPM Allstars.
